There have been some major changes to the Canadian Health Network (CHN) website since our last newsletter and readers can expect to see more changes in the future. Over the past six months, the CHN introduced a new database system for the main CHN website. The new system will make it easier for us to add new resources and make changes or corrections to current resources.
New searching and sorting functions have been added to the CHN site. When using the Guided Search method of searching, it is now possible to filter search results across population groups, so for example, when you are browsing the Collection using the Guided Search in the People with Disabilities section, you can select "Women" from the menu down the left side in order to show only results which relate to Women AND People with Disabilities. Also, you can now choose to sort your search results by Relevance, by Organization, or Alphabetically.
As a result of the new database system, many of the pages inside the website changed their addresses, so you may need to correct some of your old bookmarks or links to pages within the site. The base web address for the main site remains the same: www.canadian-health-network.ca, and the basic address for the People with Disabilities section still works: www.canadian-health-network.ca/1peoplewithdisabilities.htm. Most other URLs have changed. Please contact us if you need a complete list of the changes to URLs.
The Living with Disabilities Affiliate welcomed a new Project Manager in the fall: Bev Fyfe. Bev works on the CHN project out of her office in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the SMD Alliance. Bev replaces Dave Dessens, who moved on to a new job in Manitoba Housing. And this month, the Affiliate bids a fond farewell to William Land, who has worked as our full-time Information Specialist over the past three years. Bill is moving on to work at the Library at the Sudbury Regional Hospital in Ontario. We will all miss Bill, and wish him well in his future endeavours. Contact information for all current staff appears in the Contact Us section of the People with Disabilities Affiliate website.
The Canadian Health Network now has over 800 network contributors encompassing a vast array of health topics, and over 70 of these provide information and services specificially relating to people with disabilities in Canada. To view the list of organizations who contribute to the People with Disabilities section of the Canadian Health Network (CHN), consult our Network Contributors page. Here are details about the two latest additions to our network:

The Office for Disability Issues (ODI) has released a number of significant documents since our last newsletter. This month they posted Disability in Canada: A 2001 Profile, a major document which compiles and summarizes the statistics gathered through the 2001 PALS post-census survey. They also published Defining Disability: A Complex Issue, a review of, and framework for understanding, disability definitions in key Government of Canada initiatives. Prior to this month, the ODI published an updated version of A Way with Words and Images. The new version includes General Guidelines, advice for Media Coverage of Persons with Disabilities, and an updated Terminology Guide Concerning Persons with Disabilities. And all the way back last March, ODI posted a major Government of Canada Report on disability issues: Advancing the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (December 2002).
Every month, the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (SMD) posts a new edition of Disability Research Digest (DRD), a monthly electronic resource for consumers, professionals and the public interested in remaining current in disability related issues. The December 2003 issue is the most recent addition.
Since our last newsletter, Statistics Canada has released the rest of the data from the 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS). The data is effectively made available in Disability in Canada: A 2001 Profile, a publication released this month through the Office for Disability Issues.

In October, ARCH held a grand opening of their Library and Resource Centre now open to the public. The complete catalogue for the ARCH Library is now available for searching online. Among other things, the new site includes an extensive list of frequently asked Questions and Answers compiled through ARCH's Summary Advice and Referral service.

The Greater Toronto Hotel Association has developed a Hospitality Accessibility Checklist for its members and posted it online. The Checklist is also available in PDF format or in Microsoft Word format.
